There are legends in cultures around the globe that tell the story of how the image of the rabbit appeared on the moon. In China, Mexico, Africa, India and Japan children have heard legends of the kind and gentle rabbit that apears in the moon - the legend of rabbit moon is endearing, international, and cherished by children worldwide. |
||
One of the most charming international legends, the legend of the Jade Rabbit, is part of the Chinese Moon Festival, or Mid-autumn Festival. this legend relates the reason why there is an image of the rabbit in the moon, and is an engaging and enlightening morality tale for children. The Moon Festival, one of the most traditional events in Chinese culture, is an occasion for family reunions after the harvest. During this festival, when the full moon rises, families gather together to watch the full moon, eat moon cakes, and read stories and poems about the legends of the moon. In the legend of the Jade Rabbit, three magical wise men decide to test the character of a fox, a monkey, and a rabbit. The men turn themselves into desperate old beggars, and ask the fox, monkey and rabbit for food. While the fox and the monkey did have food, they refuse to share. But the helpful rabbit, who has nothing to give the old men, volunteers hos own tasty self by leaping into a burning campfire to roast himself for their dinner. The three men, who were not really starving, are overwhelmed by the rabbit's self sacrifice and generosity, and gave him immortal life, sending him to live in the Moon Palace as Jade Rabbit. |

Long ago, the jade emperor called for a great race among the animals of the land. The emperor had decided to bestow one year of the twelve year cycle to the twelve greatest animals in the land. To earn this lofty honor, there would be a race - from the emperor's palace to the bank of the great river, far, far away. The emperor knew that only the stongest and fastest or smartest animals would be able to make the journey and earn the honor. After days of journeying, thirteen animals arrived at the bank of the great river: The best friends cat and rat, the noble dragon, the sturdy ox, the agile monkey, the steady boar, the thoughtful rooster, the stealthy snake, the proud horse, the powerful ram, the warrior tiger, the charismatic dog, and the gentle rabbit. On the other side of the river stood the emperor. Individually, the animals quickly decided how to cross the river. The rabbit, in awe of the migthy dragon, smiled and wished him good luck. The rabbit had decided to leap from stones and logs on the river's surface to cross. When he had almost reached the other side, he slipped on a log and began to sink! Just as the rabbit felt he might lose his life, a warm wind rose up behind him and brought him safely to shore. The dragon had remembered the rabbit's kindness, and used his breath to blow the tiny rabbit across the river! The emperor was very moved by the friendship of the rabbit and the dragon, and rewarded them with the fourth and fifth years of the calendar. Only the cat, who was betrayed by the rat while crossing, did not earn a year in the Chinese zodiac. Cats today still carry their ancestor's grudge - now you know why cats hate rats!! |

| Long ago, there was a very dry season when no rain fell on the land. The elephants, who had always lived happily in the forest, watched their river dry up to almost nothing, leaving them barely enough water in which to bathe and to drink. With their water supply fading, the elephants appealed to their king for a solution. He decided that they should leave the forest to find a place where they could sate their thirst and bathe in cool waters. The elephants marched for three days until they finally came upon a clearing at the edge of the forest. There, a gorgeous meadow sprawled out before them, and in the meadow was a huge lake that would provide the elephants all the water they woul need. The elephants trumpeted their trunks in joy, as they bathed, drank and frolicked in the water. At night, exhausted and happy, they lay down to sleep, and their tremendous bodies covered nearly every inch of the huge meadow. The elephants were happy indeed. Now all of this was certainly good for the elephants, but it was very bad for the rabbits! You see, the rabbits, who are active at night, could not escape their burrows because the sleeping elephants covered their exits, leaving them no way to gather food or drink water from the lake! At daybreak, when the elephants rose and again went to the lake, the rabbits were able to excape their burrows. Rabbits, who are always clever, gatnered together and devised a plan. The rabbit leader met the king of the elephants upon his return from the lake. He told the elephant king that the moon was the guardian of the rabbits and was unhappy that the elephants were trespassing on the rabbits' home. The rabbit took the king to the lake's edge, and there they saw the moon's reflection in the lake. Believing the moon hersself had descended from the heavens, the elephant king humbly ordered his elephants back into the forest. The rabbit leader prayed to the moon to aid the gentle elephants, and she answered his prayers by sending cool rains down to fill the forest river. Both the elephants and the rabbits lived happily ever after, under the graceful watch of the moon! | ||
