Recent warnings from the American Academy of Pediatrics, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, First Candle/SIDS Alliance and the National Institute for Health and Human Development caution against the use of loose bedding, as it can be a hazard if infants cover their nose or mouth and create a situation where they can re-breathe their own carbon dioxide. Re-breathing is believed to be one of the risk factors leading to SIDS.
