Sunburns can be very dangerous to a small child, so do everything you can to prevent this. If your baby is younger than one year old and is sunburned, contact your pediatrician immediately. If your baby is younger than six months, keep him out of direct sunlight. Use the shade of a tree, umbrella, stroller canopy or other object to protect him. Dress babies in lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs, and use brimmed hats. If you cannot keep your child covered and in the shade, sunscreen can be applied. However, before covering your baby with sunscreen, be sure to apply a small amount to a limited area and watch for any reaction. History of bonnets Historically bonnets were worn not only by babies, but also by adult women and children. On Easter Sunday they switched from Winter bonnets to Summer bonnets. In Winter time the bonnets were made of heavy material and some even had whalebone or straw in them to help prevent rain or snow to come through. In addition to the more practical bonnets, some women had fashionable bonnets as well. Most women had a few bonnets each, some they wore on the farm or in the country, some in the city. The rich or more well of people had different bonnets for various occations. A light weight Summer Bonnet was worn at Easter and during Summer months. The Summer Bonnets often had floral print to celebrate the return of the new growing season. Some even decorated their bonnets with real flowers. Lot's of people joininig the New York Easter pararade still carries out this tradition. There are also other communities in which the bonnets are still used. Originally bonnet was the name given to mens head wear. Priests and nobels wore bonnets of velvet and ermine or of velvet surrounded by the coronet and the bonnet of Bluff King Hal's time, which the guards at the Tower of London, called Yeoman Warders beef-eaters yet wear. The first actual and proper bonnets came in the 18th Century and looked like hats and where often decorated with lace and feathers. At the end of the 18th Century the bonnet started taking the shape it still has today. Little House on the Prairie has made bonnets very popular again.
